Since 2004, October has been designated by the U.S. government as Cybersecurity Awareness Month. Every year, the awareness campaign adopts a theme. This year’s theme is “See Yourself in Cyber.” The idea is that, while security may seem like a daunting task, it ultimately comes down to individual people making smart decisions. But people can’t make smart decisions without education and awareness.
To help spread awareness and to humanize the security space, Asylas is doing a special blog series in October. We will be covering all our favorite ways to stay connected with the latest news and trends in cybersecurity, risk management, and more. Each Wednesday of the month, we will be sharing our favorite sources of information, from blogs to podcasts to individual hashtags and social media accounts.
This week, we are sharing the top government agencies and regulatory bodies to follow.
The Cybersecurity & Infrastructure Security Agency maintains an archive of all its alerts on its website. At the bottom of the page, you can enter your email address to subscribe to these important updates.
The Federal Bureau of Investigation also offers an email subscription to its updates which cover everything from missing persons and wanted fugitives to criminal justice issues and crime statistics. You can subscribe to any or all alerts. We recommend signing up for the Internet Crime Complaint Center subscription.
The Department of Health and Human Services maintains two Listservs for disseminating information. The topics covered include health information privacy and security as well as technical guidance materials.
The Payment Card Industry (PCI) Security Standards Council has been around since late 2006. This group of credit card providers manages the ongoing evolution of security standards around paying for goods and services. The PCI Perspectives blog is important to follow if you work with anyone in the payment collection space.
In addition to following these important sources of information, please take the following key steps that CISA is promoting during Cybersecurity Awareness Month:

- Use Strong Passwords
- Recognize and Report Phishing
- Update Your Software
